The Engineering for Developing Communities Program started in 2003. Then, thanks to a generous endowment from the Mortenson family in 2009, the program's offerings expanded significantly and it grew into an education and research center called the Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities (MCEDC).

MCEDC combines classroom work, research and development, and real world, on-the-ground experience to train engineers to work in partnership with organizations in developing communities worldwide. Our goal is to create sustainable and appropriate solutions to meet people's basic needs.
